GERGELY SZATMÁRI
GERGELY SZATMÁRI is the professor of Moholy- Nagy University of Art and Design. He has numerous exhibitions at Hungary and other countries as well. He has three amazing photography series in book form as well: the Conventional book, the Meadowlans book and the American Idler book. In 2012 he had an exhibition from the American Idler series at the Faur Zsófi Gallery.
Gabor Pfisztner wrote the following about the American Idler:
“The American Idler was created in a world where the feeling of superfluity and the menacing emptiness of the remaining time can be observed on surrounding persons and surrounding things, among which their time flows by in a compulsory way. Here, as well as on the landscapes, the main urge is to recall the feeling of immobility, the apparent constancy which implies the condition of death. Details of deserted streets, squares, parking places, buffets become impersonal, unbearable, life-less. This method implies something basically antagonistic. The imagery of the American Idlers its streets, interiors and exteriors, its hesitatingly loitering characters. Here appear apparently supernatural lights in the background, filtering in through the cracks, and create a strange, dream-like atmosphere. The world becomes a scenery where the unreal becomes real, it is a perfect opposite of the monotonous reality of the ordinary world.”
The Meadowlands series was made in the USA at 2009.
The Meadowlands book is starting with the following intro:
,,New Jersey is as American as it comes! Actually the state is a very diverse one, a significant producer of agriculture with rolling farmland reminiscent of the Great Plains with some of the highest elevations on the Eastern seaboard, beautiful natural rivers, and elaborate country estates. It is also host to some of America’s most wealthy suburbs and worst urban slums intertwined with every franchised entity that capitalism could conjure. Popular culture celebrates the place: you know where Snookie and Bruce Springsteen live, where Frank Sinatra came from, and let us not forget that it was home to the poets Allan Ginsberg, William Carlos Williams, and Walt Whitman, and the geniuses, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. The photographs in this book, of this in-between place through which Tony Soprano drove in the beginning of every episode of the TV show The Sopranos, connect the viewer in one way or another to all that is New Jersey and all that is America, past and present.”
